Stepping Stones Programme

Young man holdig pen, sat in front of a computer screenStepping Stones is a flexible programme of study. It is designed, developed and delivered at Whitegates College and focusses on the following key themes through the development and provision of individually tailored learning programmes:

  • Managing the local environment
  • Managing in different settings
  • Managing moving on

Who is the Course for?

Learners with a diagnosis of ASC or Asperger's Syndrome who experience moderate to severe learning difficulties age between 16 and 24 years.

What do I need?

To apply you will need to:

  • Have a diagnosis for Autistic Spectrum Condition inc. Asperger's Syndrome.
  • Be between 16 and 22 years of age
  • Be able to cope in small groups with support
No other formal qualifications are needed, just a willingness to learn

What will I study?

You can develop your skills and knowledge in

  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • ICT
  • Life and Social Skills
  • Work and Vocational Skills
  • Further academic study

What will I gain?

You will develop your independent living and social skills, your ability to cope alongside others, and have the opportunity to try out a variety of types of work. Where appropriate this could lead to a range of independent living provision, sheltered, supported or part time and full time employment.

You will also gain appropriate accreditation or certification matched to your learning needs.

To help you succeed we will provide support tailored to your individual needs to help you develop your full potential, including access to specialist equipment and resources where needed.

Progression Opportunities

Learner destinations are discussed prior to a place being offered at the college in order that the appropriate progression route can be planned. Following successful completion of a 3 year programme on Stepping Stones, typical destinations could include specialist day services, further college placement, paid/supported employment or Higher Education.

Learners engage in a high level of independence training involving making choices and coping in wider environments to help aid progression on completion of their studies.

Regular Tutorials and Connexions advice are given to guide learnerss with their progression opportunities.
